I mentioned the Hotel El Convento in my what you should know about cruises from San Juan post a couple of months ago but I thought the greatness of this boutique hotel in San Juan deserved its own post. Having stayed there last year it is with out of the doubt one of the best all around hotels we have stayed at. From the exceptional service to the historic significance of the building. This was the perfect pre cruise hotel and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone staying in San Juan whether they are cruising or not.
The hotel is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World which boast some of the most unique hotels in the world. Located in the heart of Old San Juan, you are within walking distance to El Campo Del Morro, the famous Puerto Rican fort as well as the entire Old San Juan area including the city walls, casinos and even the major cruise port (one port requires a taxi).

The Luxury Room
Rooms feature hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, flat screen tv’s and plantation shutters overlooking beautiful old San Juan. Another unique feature that I have only seen in this hotel is the use of soundproofing doors so that sounds from the outside halls and restaurants do not interfere with your rest. Little touches like this really set this hotel apart from the more popular beach hotels in San Juan. For those looking to go the beach in San Juan, the Hotel El Convento offers the “El Convento Beach Club” which grants beach access at two sister properties, La Concha and the Isla Verde Beach Resort. You can even charge meals and drinks back to your room at El Convento.
Daily Manager Reception & Plunge Pool
Another nice touch is the daily wine and hors d’ouevres. Grab a free glass of wine and a plate of cheese and crackers and head to one of the tables out on the terrace or around the halls of the interior of the hotel. Later take a quick dip in the elegant plunge pool overlooking the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista.
How to get a good deal on the El Convento
Prices can be steep at times but for the ability to stay at one of the best hotels in the world it’s worth the price, especially if you are only staying for one night before a cruise. Always start with the main website to get a starting price then move on to other travel sites such as travelocity or Hotels.com. These should have lower rates than the main website but in the end you may have the same luck as we did by using priceline or hotwire. By using Hotwire we were able to get a rate around $150 which is incredible for a hotel like this.
